O’r Ty Hwn / From This House: Rhuthun and the Welsh Women’s Peace Petition 1923/24

Can mlynedd yn ôl, llofnododd 390,296 o ferched Cymru ddeiseb dros heddwch byd. Yn eu plith, roedd dros 700 o ferched o dref Rhuthun.

Dyfeisiwyd prosiect O’r Ty Hwn gan yr artist lleol, Bethan M. Hughes, i gofio ac i ddathlu y weithred ryfeddol hon dros heddwch. Mewn cyfres o ddarnau celf tecstiliau, mae detholiad o rai o’r llofnodion gwreiddiol o’r Ddeiseb wedi cael eu brodio gan wirfoddolwyr, nifer yn ddisgynyddion y merched o 1923, eraill yn byw, gweithio neu astudio yn yr un cyfeiriad heddiw. Trwy gysylltiadau teuluol neu archifdy, llwyddwyd i ddarganfod lluniau o rai o’r merched i’w gosod ar y darnau. Gobeithir y draw rhagor i’r golwg rhyw ddydd.

Ar wefan y prosiect www.ortyhwn.wordpress.com mae modd gweld yr ymchwil i hanes 38 o’r merched a roddodd eu llofnod ar y Ddesieb Heddwch.

Agor cwr y llen ar bennod unigryw yn hanes y dref mae’r prosiect hwn, yn y gobaith y bydd yn ysgogi eraill i ddarganfod mwy am hanes y merched yn eu teulu neu a fu’n byw yn eu tÅ· ganrif yn ôl. Dyma gyfle i gychwyn cofnodi bywydau merched a wnaeth gyfraniad pwysig a gwerthfawr i fywyd y dref. Gobeithio y bydd hefyd yn ein ysbrydoli ni i gyd i weithio dros heddwch a chyfeillgarwch.

Ar gyfer Drysau Agored Rhuthun fis Medi 2024, mewn 19 lleoliad yn y dre, dangoswyd y darnau celf yn ffenestri’r tai lle casglwyd y llofnod ganrif yn ôl.

Noddwyd y prosiect gan Gymdeithas Ddinesig Rhuthun a’r Cylch gyda nawdd Llywodraeth y DU trwy Hamdden Sir Ddinbych, a chefnogaeth Canolfan Grefft Rhuthun. Cydnabyddir hefyd gymorth Archifau Gogledd-Ddwyrain Cymru, Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru, Academi Heddwch Cymru, y gwirfoddolwyr fu’n pwytho, a pherchnogion y lleoliadau lle dangoswyd y darnau.

One hundred years ago, 390,296 women in Wales signed a petition for world peace. Amongst them were over 700 women in Ruthin.
​
The From This House project has been created by local artist, Bethan M. Hughes, to remember and to celebrate this remarkable act in the cause of peace. In a series of textile art pieces, a selection of the original Petition signatures have been embroidered by volunteers, several are descendants of the women of 1923, others live, work or study at the same address today. Through family connections or the Archives, photographs of some of the women have been found to include in the works. It is hoped that more will come to light one day.

On the project website www.ortyhwn.wordpress.com you can see the research into the stories of 38 of the women who placed their signatures on the Peace Petition.
​
This project is a brief glimpse at a unique event in the town’s history, in the hope that it will inspire others to discover more about the story of the women in their family or who lived in their house a century ago. This is an opportunity to start recording the lives of women who made a significant contribution to the life of the town. It will also hopefully inspire us all to work for peace and friendship.
​
For Ruthin Open Doors in September 2024, the pieces were displayed in 19 locations around town, in the windows of the houses where that signature was collected a century ago.
The From This House project was created and led by artist Bethan M. Hughes, Ruthin during her residency at Ruthin Craft Centre.
​
The project was sponsored by Ruthin and District Civic Association with funding from UK Government via Denbighshire Leisure Ltd with support from Ruthin Craft Centre. The support of North East Wales Archives, National Library of Wales, Academi Heddwch Cymru (Wales Peace Academy), the stitching volunteers, and the location owners where the pieces were displayed, is gratefully acknowledged.
